2020 Season is underway...
Although there is still uncertainty, at this point and time, the XC season is underway. Some things may be a little different while hopefully much remains the same. We really need everyone in this together to make this season occur. Please continue to cooperate with all team, district, PIAA, and state guidelines to allow our kids to have a season and encourage kids to remain positive despite adversity. Thanks for all you do for the cross country family! |
JUBERT MEDALS AT STATE MEET
Alex Jubert becomes top male finisher at PIAA Meet since 1996. Jubert crossed the line in 16:48 to medal at 17th place. There were 12 runners within :05 (16:45-16:50) where Alex finished spread out over 4 'waves' of races. Bruce and Justin Gaydos finished 23rd and 24th respectively in 1996 for Norwin's last male medalists. Jubert caps off season where he set course records at Greensburg Salem, Latrobe, and Derry, as well as won Bald Eagle Invitational, Westmoreland County Champion and finished 5th at WPIALs and ran 2nd best time in Norwin history with a 15:57, second only to Ed Ziegler's 1980 run of 15:47. Norwin cross country isn’t always about crossing the finish line first. Or last, for that matter.
Coach Brian Fleckenstein likes to take to social media, particularly Twitter, to make the sport more fun. It is something that has bonded his runners.
“Running is hard,” the coach said. “Our sport is most people’s sports’ punishment. We have to keep the kids engaged and part of the family. We really try to promote and encourage everyone on the team from the top kid to our 50th kid.”
The all-inclusive atmosphere gives Norwin a sense of pride, as well as strength in numbers.

The WPIAL is expected to announce a new site for its cross country championships this week, and one of the sites being considered is White Oak Park.
If the WPIAL chooses White Oak Park, then the first Bald Eagle Cross Country Classic, hosted by the Baldwin and Serra Catholic programs, served as a great warm-up course for the teams that competed Saturday.
Norwin senior Alex Jubert certainly enjoyed running on the course, breezing to the title in Class AAA in a time of 15 minutes, 57.15 seconds. South Fayette senior Aaron Skerbetz was second (16:17.23).
